Interrogative Sentence / Question : {Indirect Speech} with rules and examples.

Direct से Indirect में बदलने के नियम :

1 . Reporting Verb ' say ' को ask ' , ' enquire of ' या ' want to know ' में बदल देना चाहिए । 

2 . यदि वाक्य सहायक क्रिया ( Auxiliary Verb ) से प्रारंभ हुआ हो , तो Inverted Commas का लोप कर if ' या ' whether ' का प्रयोग करना चाहिए एवं Sentence को Assertive बना देना चाहिए ; जैसे_

 Renu said to him , " Are you ill ? " ( Direct Speech ) 
Renu asked him if he was ill . ( Indirect Speech ) 

3 . यदि Questions सहायक क्रिया ' Do ' / ' Does ' से प्रारंभ हों , तो इन्हें Indirect में बदलते समय हटा देना चाहिए ; जैसे _

Ram said to me , " Do you write a letter ? " ( Direct Speech ) 
Ram asked me if I wrote a letter . ( Indirect Speech ) 
Shyam said to me , " Does he write a letter ? " ( Direct Speech )
Shyam asked me if he wrote a letter . ( Indirect Speech ) 

4 . यदि Questions ' Do . . . . . . not ' / ' Does . . . . . . . not ' / ' Did . . . . . . . . not ' से प्रारंभ हों , तो Indirect बनाते समय ' don' t , doesn' t ' तथा ' didn' t को कदापि नहीं हटाना चाहिए एवं ' do ' / does ' को change of Tense का ध्यान रखते हुए प्रयोग करना चाहिए : जैसे_

Radha said to Shyam , " Does he nor write a letter ? " ( Direct Speech ) 
Radha asked me if he did not write a letter . ( Indirect Speech )

5 . यदि Ouestions WH - Word से प्रारंभ हुआ हो , तो Indirect में बदलते समय Inverted Commas का लोप कर किसी प्रकार के Conjunction ( if / whether ' ) का प्रयोग न कर वाक्य को Assertive में बदल देना चाहिए ; जैसे_

She said to me , " Where do you live ? " | ( Direct Speech )
She asked me where I lived . ( Indirect Speech )
He said to me . " How old are you ? " ( Direct Speech ) 
He asked me how old I was . ( Indirect Speech ) 

6 . वाक्य के अंत में Full Stop (. ) का प्रयोग करना चाहिए । 

7 . General Rules का भी पालन करना चाहिए । 

Note ( i ) : यदि Reported Speech Shall ' से प्रारंभ हुआ हो और उससे Permission का बोध हो रहा हो , तो Indirect Speech में Reporting Verb ' say ' का ' ask ' में बदल देना चाहिए ; जैसे_

Direct - Ravi said , " Shalll open the window ? "
Indirect - Ravi asked it he should open the window .
Direct - Dinesh said to me . " Shalll give you a pen ? "
Indirect - Dinesh asked me if he should give me a pen .

( ii ) : यदि Reported Speech ' Shall ' से प्रारंभ हआ हो और उससे प्रस्ताव ( proposal ) या सलाह ( suggestion ) का बोध हो रहा हो , तो Indirect Speech में Reporting | Verb ' say ' को अर्थानुसार ' offer ' या ' suggest ' में बदल देना चाहिए ; जैसे_ 

Direct - He said , " Shall I bring you a cup of tea ? "
Indirect - He offered to bring me a cup of tea .
Direct - He said , " Shall we meet at the school ? "
Indirect - He suggested to meet at the school .

( iii ) : यदि Reported Speech Will you ' या ' Would you ' या ' Could you ' से प्रारंभ हुआ हो और उससे आग्रह ( request ) या निमंत्रण ( invitation ) का भाव झलक रहा हो , तो Indirect में बदलते समय Reporting Verb ' say ' + ' to ' को आग्रह के अर्थ में ' ask ' / request ' में तथा निमंत्रण के अर्थ में ' invite ' / ' offer ' में बदल देना । चाहिए ; जैसे _

Direct - Ramesh said to me , will you / Would you / Could you recommend my case ? "
Indirect - Ramesh asked / requested me to recommend his case .
Direct - I said to Hari , " Will you / Would you / Could you take dinner with me ? "
Indirect - I invited / offered Hari to take dinner with me .

( iv ) : यदि Reported Speech में Could I have . . . . . . . . . . . य Could you give me . . . . . . . ' का प्रयोग हुआ हो , तो Indirect Speech में बदलते समय इन्हें Reporting Verb ' say ' सहित ' ask for ' में बदल दिया जाता है । जैसे_ 

Direct - He said , " Could I have a glass of water ? "
Indirect - - He asked ( me ) for a glass of water .
Direct - He said " Could you give me a bottle of milk".
Indirect - He asked ( me ) for a bottle of milk.

(v ) : यदि Reported Speech में सम्बोधन हेतु Noun का प्रयोग हुआ हो , तो उसे Indirect में बदलते समय Reporting Object बना देना चाहिए ; जैसे _

Sanjay said , " Dolly , why don' t you try for a job ? " ( Direct ) 
Sanjay said to Dolly , " Why don' t you try for ajob ? " ( Transformed Direct )
Sanjay asked Dolly why she didn ' t try for a job . ( Indirect ) 

( vi ) : यदि Reported Speech में Sir , Madam ' . Your honour ' , Your majesty ' . ' Your Highness ' इत्यादि का प्रयोग सादर सम्बोधन हेतु हुआ हो , तो Indirect में इसे हटाकर ( a ) Reporting Subject के बाद ' respectfully ' जोड़ देना चाहिए , बशर्ते । Reporting Subjectके बादObjectरहितReporting Verb ' say का प्रयोग हुआ हो । ( b ) Reporting Object के बाद ' respectfully ' जोड देना चाहिए , बशर्ते Reporting Speech में Objectसहित Reporting Verb ' say to ' / tell का प्रयोग हुआ हो 

Examples :

Direct - He said , " Sir , May I sing a song ? "
Indirect - He respectfully asked if he could sing a song .
Direct - Ranu said to me " Madam . can I go home ? "
Indirect - Ranu asked me respectfully if he could go home .

( vii ) : यदि Reported Speech में Question Tag लगा हुआ हो , तो उसे Indirect में बदलते समय drop कर देना चाहिए और Reported Speech को Interrogative में  परिवर्तित कर Indirect में बदल देना चाहिए : जैसे_ 

She said to me , You are lazy , aren ' t you ? " ( Direct )
She said to me , " Are you lazy ? " ( Transformed Direct ) 
She asked me if / whether I was lazy . ( Indirect ) 
Amit said to Abha , " You love me , don ' t you ? " | ( Direct )
Amit said to Abha . " Do you love me ? " ( Transformed Direct )
 Amit asked Abha if / whether she loved him . ( Indirect )

27 . The fat woman asked the doctor , " Could I lose five kilos in one week ? "

30 . She said to me , " Where did you meet my son ? " 
31 . You said to Mohan , " When could you lend me a hundred rupees ? "

33 . She said , " Did you like it , Ram ? " 
34 . Yousaid to me , “ Were you at your place yesterday ? "
35 . I said to him , " Whose car did you borrowlast night . ? " 
36 . He said to me , " Will Hari buy my cycle ? " 
37 She said to you , " Will you lend me five hundred rupees ? " 
38 . Shila said to her guest , " Will you , please , take tea ? " 
39 . He said to the policeman , " Will you tell me the way ? " 
40 . I said to him . “ Will your son not give me back my money ? "
