UNDERSTANING AN ESSAY

An essay is a long piece of writing that gives information about a given topic. It also helps to communicate the writer's point of view to the readers. The purpose of an essay writing is to test the language proficiency of the candidate along with his/her creativity and intellectual skills. It tests (or evaluates) the ability of the candidate to present his/her ideas in the best possible manner. A good essay should be clear, concise and well-organised. It should create an impact in the mind of the readers. 

The length of an essay varies according to the requirement. An essay writing not only develops logical thinking, but also improve the writing abilities and organisational skills of the student.

TYPES OF AN ESSAY 

  •  Contemporary Essays These essays are based on current topics or contemporary issues. Regular reading of newspapers and magazines keeps one upto date about contemporary issues. Some examples of contemporary issues are: Rio Olympics, GST, Net Neutrality and Uniform Civil Code. 

  • Social Essays These essays deal with the social issues that badly affects our society and country. Some examples of social essays are: Dowry, Illiteracy, Poverty and Unemployment.  

  • Economic Essays Topics related to money, finance, trade etc., cover under economic essays. Some examples of economic essays are: How will FBI affect the Retail Sector in India?, Development of Industry in India and Banking Sector in India.  

  • Political Essays Topics or issues related to the politics and governance cover under political essays. Some examples of political essays are: Electoral Reforms and Indian Democracy, Women's Reservation Bill, Criminalisation of Politics and Objective & Challenges of Governance. While writing the political essays one should never be biased towards the present government and its politics.

  • Biographical Essays These essays are based on life stories of famous personalities like freedom fighters (Subhash Chandra Bose and Mahatma Gandhi), Sports person (MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar), Business Tycoons (Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg) etc. 

  • Idiomatic Essays An English idioms like All that Glitters is not Gold, Failures are the Pillars of Success etc., forms the topic for idiomatic essays. These types of essay always required to be started with the explanation of an idiom.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Apart from these common types, some other topics like International Affairs, Ecology and Environment, Science and Technology, Sports etc. also asked in the examination. 

PARTS OF AN ESSAY 

A well written essay mainly divided into three parts 

  • Introduction The introduction (or introductory paragraph or opening paragraph) is the most important part of an essay. An eye-catching and impactful introduction generates the reader's interest to go through the entire essay. 

           A brief summary of the topic can be used to introduce the topic. Remember that it should be short and to the point. An relevant quotation can be added at the beginning to capture the reader's attention. The introduction should properly convey the main point of the essay. 

  • Main Body The body of the essay contains all information about the topic. In this part gradually develop the topic while writing the essay. Remember that your views expressed in the essay should not be biased. 

         Only logical arguments, relevant facts and figures should be given. Apart from this, you can also added suitable explanation or elaboration should be added wherever required.

  • Conclusion A strong conclusion is equally important to an essay as an eye-catching introduction. The concluding paragraphs should summarise the essay in a few lines. A strong conclusion provides a final perspective on the given topic. An interesting anecdote or quotation can be added to end the essay in an impressive manner. It should not be too long.
